Advertising in an airport

Dubai International Airport, UAE

Client

Triagonal Information Design and Dubai Airports

Project Description

As world's busiest airport by international passenger traffic, Dubai is striving to continually improve the passenger service and appointed Triagonal Information Design, together with Ramboll ME, to review the airport’s wayfinding and develop a brand new wayfinding concept. As part of the project, and due to the importance of coordinating advertising with wayfinding, Compass was brought in to review how the balance of the two could be improved, whilst protecting and potentially improving commercial income.

Scope of Work

  1. Carried out an independent review of the current advertising at DXB, with particular focus on Concourse D
  2. Worked closely with Triagonal to produce a fully coordinated wayfinding and advertising programme in Concourse D
  3. Recommended clear advertising and wayfinding planning principles for roll out across all terminals.

"Triagonal has worked together with Compass International Media and MD Phil Weake, on multiple projects with great results.

Our recent project for DXB was a great example how combining airport advertising planning with wayfinding is the way forward.

For us, the key factor is that Compass has a deep understanding of airport advertising markets and we have absolute confidence that the solutions we produce with them are not only going to enhance wayfinding, but will also optimise advertising sales and retail support – a real win-win for our airport clients."

Project outcome

D Concourse suffered from substantial conflicts between different types of signage - wayfinding, commercial and advertising - resulting in a cluttered and confusing environment for passengers.

In our recommendations, we were able to show how all three elements could be improved, with the potential for a better passenger experience, an improved advertising programme and higher advertising and retail sales.
