St Petersburg International Airport, Russia

Client: The Design Solution

Project Description:

St Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and an important business and cultural centre. The airport currently has two terminals, Pulkovo 1, which is mostly used for domestic traffic, and Pulkovo 2 which is an international terminal.

Northern Capital Gateway was the successful bidder for the public-private partnership to develop the airport over a 30-year period. As part of the PPP agreement, NCG will redevelop and expand Pulkovo, including new passenger terminal facilities. The programme for expansion has several phases with Phase 1 designed to handle 14 million passengers. Ultimately the airport will be capable of handling 30 million passengers by the end of the PPP agreement in 2040.

As part of the development program, Pulkovo 1 will be converted into a domestic departure terminal, with all passenger processes taking place in a new terminal building alongside. The airport chose The Design Solution for retail and overall commercial planning and design on the project, with Compass providing specialist advertising consultancy.

Scope of Work:

  • 1. Defining the ideal number and location of all interior/terminal advertising sites
  • 2. Detailing the optimum size and type of media for each site
  • 3. Working with the design team to integrate all sites into the architecture of the terminal buildings

Compass comment:

A close working relationship with The Design Solution, together with our previous experience in Russian airports, has resulted in an advertising program that is fully integrated with terminal architecture and will be sought after by both Russian and International advertisers. The advertising program includes a highly effective network of sites supporting the retail offer in the departures check-in and IDL areas.
